[FICTION] A Love Letter to Cebu By President “Bongbong” Marcos About LapuLapu Vancouver Tragedy

My beloved Cebu,

I write to you with a heavy heart. The savage attack on our kababayans in Vancouver—on the sacred Lapulapu Day no less—is a reminder that evil still walks among us. Eleven lives, stolen. It feels like a wound to our national soul. I am a father. I am a Filipino. And I grieve with you.

But we must not just grieve—we must return.

"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23)

"For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15 For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me." - Romans 7:14

I, too, am a sinner.

But I know in my bones that we sinners must go back to Jesus, as we do what we hate, even if we know what is good. But our flesh will still pay the consequences, but the flesh is already dead with Christ as he was crucified. Life we are talking about is in the spirit.

Who is innocent that deserves not be stoned?

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray...”
(2 Chronicles 7:14).

Also, Cebuanos, we need skin in the game. Government is service—not salary. Every government employee should live like the people they serve. Minimum wage. That’s the only way to stay honest. As Nassim Taleb says, “If you see fraud and do not say fraud, you are a fraud.”

Banks should stop gambling with your money. If they fail, they pay. Not us. No bailouts. That’s the rule now. We go back to planting our own rice. We feed our own. We grow, not import.

Also, the classroom should no longer be a factory. We’re changing the school system—less memorizing, more doing. Build boats. Grow food. Learn to repair, not just recite.

Entrepreneurs are our new heroes. Create a business. Employ five people—that's five families saved. “Millennials think that joining an NGO is a great way to save the world. I say no. Start a company. That's how you improve mankind. We did not pull 2 billion people out of poverty thanks to NGOs and bureaucrats — we pulled them out thanks to capitalism, by generating economic growth.”

Like the song says: “Hand in hand, we'll find our promised land.” That’s what we do—hand in hand.

So to our global investors, come to Lapulapu. Build in Cebu. Film a Bisaya movie here. Use our lands, our shores, our people. The talented people from here will do a great job in doing this. Invest now and be part of a future built on resilience, faith, and local pride. You’ll find not only ROI—but purpose.

Yours in love,
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
